Equal Pay or We Walk Away

In October 2018, a demonstration of more than 8000, mostly women, took to the streets of Glasgow and brought the city to a standstill.

Cleaners, care workers, teaching assistants, and others employed by Glasgow City Council in predominantly female roles, walked out of their workplaces and took part in the largest industrial action in recent history. The crux of the dispute was historic pay inequality and the introduction of a job evaluation scheme, the Workforce Pay and Benefit Review. Purportedly adopted to address pay inequality, the scheme, instead, further embedded it. In response, Glasgow’s women organised, fought back, and won.

Equal Pay or We Walk Away explores this remarkable tale, from the origins of the strike to its aftermaths. The use of in-depth oral histories uncovers the story of Glasgow’s Equal Pay Dispute through the voices of the women who took part. Revealed are stories of struggle, solidarity, and celebration of one of the most significant equal pay strikes in UK history.
