Purpose of the role
Creative Canopies is a dispersed community orchard growing across Govanhill and the wider Southside. It is a three-year planting programme held within a relationship of care intended to last for twenty-five years and beyond. The orchard is threaded through with learning, art and seasonal celebration and connects across the Trust to wellbeing, the People’s Pantry and Rags to Riches.
The Community Gardener provides the horticultural knowledge and practical leadership that makes the orchard possible on the ground. The postholder assesses sites, recommends suitable fruit and nut trees, leads planting and aftercare, and enables residents to develop the skills and confidence to care for their trees over the long term.
This is also a relational role. Creative Canopies depends on residents trusting the project, welcoming a tree into their space and becoming active custodians of a shared urban canopy. The Community Gardener builds that trust through warm, culturally sensitive engagement, dependable practical support and clear horticultural guidance.
The “Environmental Connector” part of the title reflects the other side of the job. The postholder links trees, residents and local groups, and connects the orchard with other parts of the Trust’s work, such as wellbeing, the People’s Pantry and Rags to Riches, as well as with ecological partners across neighbourhoods.
The role brings together four important qualities: skilled horticulture, community trust, creative contribution and reliable ways of working. It feeds directly into the project’s four evaluation aims: increasing tree cover in areas of deprivation; enabling residents to take active responsibility for canopy care; changing how people relate to urban trees; and building ecological partnerships across neighbourhoods.
