Art is at the heart of the campaign to save Govanhill Baths. Creativity from and with the community is vital for our personal and collective health and should be part of everyone’s life.
Govanhill Baths Arts
RE:MADE
A festive market of reuse, repair and reinvention
Art is at the heart of Govanhill Baths Community Trust — and always has been.
Since the 140-day occupation that saved this building in 2001, creativity has been how this community thinks, argues, grieves and imagines forward. Our arts programme spans ceramics, dance, heritage, public commissions, spatial justice, festival-making and international exchange — empowering artists and communities to take the leap of imagination made necessary by social and environmental crisis, one arts programme at a time.
Our commissions include a community COVID memorial marking collective loss and resilience in Govanhill. We produce and support the Govanhill International Festival & Carnival, Scotland’s largest community-rooted anti-racist festival, with over eighty events every year. Arts intersects with everything we do: our heritage and archive programme, our Deep End ceramics studio, Creative Canopies, our urban orchard and growing network, and our work alongside collaborations across Wellbeing and Creative Reuse. Whether that’s a community COVID memorial marking collective loss and resilience, Nathan Coley’s Pineapple Trophy, a sterling silver award born from the pineapple thrown at the Battle of Calder Street, or a civic arts programme asking who holds the freedom to appear and be heard in public space, the work is local in its roots and uncontained in its ambitions.
You can view and download our Spatial Justice publication below. A dynamic arts programme will be part of the newly refurbished Govanhill Baths.
